American Arrogance
July 11th 2008 00:49
GUESS WHAT......Iran test fires more missiles and guess who has to shove their nose in everyone's business, yes that's right US. The Godlike American arrogance factor with another country. After the test firings the Americans have to go and say that we will go to war yet again to protect our allies. Screw our allies how about the American President concentrate on our own problems instead of worrying about everyone else. If we attack them they have threatened to shutdown a place that 40 percent of the worlds oil passes through, that would be fantastic. With all of our other problems at hand why not make the oil prices a little higher and give Americans a little more to worry about. No, you know what, lets take our country and see how far we can drive it into the ground before Bush leaves office. Now doesn't attacking Iran sound a whole lot better.....NOT. If we could mind our own business every once in awhile and lose our Godlike arrogance factor maybe we would get along with more countries, what do you think?

The government are smart, they know more than us. I'm sure that in the scheme of things they are making the right decision. Have you ever thought about the long term consequences.
Maybe by not stepping into other people's matters things could get out of hands on a global scale in 10-15 years time. Yeah oil prices go up but that could mean a better future. A future where oil doesn't leave these countries or war hits American soils.
Over all American have it better than many other countries, so shut up and let the government do their job

They forget all too quickly the only reason we really need to justify protecting Europe, besides our cultural heritage (or what'll be left of it should Muslims really grab hold of the remaining governing agencies regarding poltical correctness, etc.) is that we don't want the radical Muslims any closer on any Eurasian soil than they are now.
American arrogance? Well, let's say we earned the right to be a little more than arrogant every now and then. Or have you already forgotten places like Omaha Beach, Anzio, Holland, and so forth?
Don't tell me, you've got a picture of Jacques Chirac hanging in your living room!

The "arrogance" I was speaking about wasn't the kind of swaggering mindset of the NEOCONS in Washington, DC. Not that kind at all. It's one thing to be vigilant against our enemies, and being wary of potential foes. It's another thing to treat the world like a boardgame for academics.
The kind I was speaking of is one born out of sheer frustration of having to feel as if we're the guilty party of every thing bad that's happened or happening in the world and that much of this stems from some very supercillious foreign states, particularly France; Sarkozy notwithstanding. It's just the way they've been for the last sixty years, and the UN is often no better.
I agree with you that we should be doing more to improve life within our borders, but we also have to look out for our interests abroad and not forget that what happens "there" i.e. abroad, doesn't always stay there like that catchy Las Vegas ad. Sept. 11th should've taught us that once and for all. When I used the term "arrogance," I was sort of speaking tongue-in-cheek and trying to use as few words as possible to state clearly that just because we're not perfect abroad or at home, it doesn't mean we have to take it on the chin almost every time.
It's awfully difficult to do good things for people when you're always blamed for what you didn't do wrong and are never given any benefits of the doubt, or credit for what you've done right. It's time we put that old "Blame AmeriKa First" nonsense to rest once and for all. That's not arrogance. That's common sense.

That’s odd, for all of it’s imperfections you have a great travel infrastructure, reasonably safe highways, access to public transportation, primary education for your children, access to hospitals and nursing facilities. Reliable sources for electricity, water, sanitation, food and products to improve your life such as, vitamins, clothing, automobiles and appliances. That’s taking care of business isn’t it?
All this money going toward Iraq and such to build a better economy for them. What about putting some money into our own childrens future and taking care of our own country before we worry to much about everyone else. I would say that our children and their children deserve the right to a good future rather than to a country where we choose to put money into other countries and leave our own country suffering.
America invests heavily in programs like headstart, primary and secondary educations. If parents can’t work, we have a welfare system to help keep their lives stabilized and a police force to help protect them. What you’re suggesting is that the government should provide everything for your children and absolve you of your responsibility to raise them.
American government has lost site of what it means to live in America, we should enjoy our way of life and not go day to day wondering if we will have a job the next day to pay for our children etc.... I was in the army here in America until I was in a car accident and hurt my back, so I know what it means to serve our country and I have never lost site of the big picture.
You know what it’s like to have served your country because you were “injured in a car accident?” Your need to bear this thought in mind, “your job security with never be any more secure that what your boss had for breakfast,” it’s your responsibility to be of enough real value to your employer to keep you employed. If your boss can’t earn profits by your labors, he won’t value you and that’s on YOU.
I share that with you as a disabled Marine and former small business owner.
Yes America deserves a little arrogance but its starting to go to far. Soon someone is going to push back and we are not going to like the answer they have. America can't fight everyone, even though this is America, we are not invincible like the government would like everyone to believe.
We’d be so much stronger if the entitlement mentality were flushed down the toilet along with unpatriotic citizens who want, and want and want but won’t contribute to America’s greatness.
So yes American Arrogance is going too far and the government needs to take a step back and re-evaluate their way of thought.
Like it or not Heath, the American government reflects choices you did or didn’t make, like voting, working, paying taxes or being on welfare. You should educate yourself a little more about your country, the country that you treat with such disdain. Lastly, if this country is such a bad place to be, why are so many foreigners willing to risk everything (including their lives) to get here?
So, Heath, whats really pissing you off? America can't possibly be the root of all problems in your world or the world at large. Got issues?

And unless you've been voting in every election to change things from county to federal level, writing letters to your congressmen and state reps, and otherwise getting involved in educating Americans and setting up petitions, you have no grounds to bitch about what's taking place within our government.
No grounds at all.
If you hate America so much, try serving in Southeast Asia or out in the middle of the Persian Gulf or on a rock in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Maybe you've grown so fat and insulated and spoiled in your own wealthy country that your sense of perspective has atrophied.
If you're not part of the solution, you're a part of the problem Heath.

As for the last comment I do vote and make it a point to vote because people were to ignorant to vote in the last presidental election. So look what happened, slow progression down hill with our economy among the weakening dollar. I never said I hate america, I disliked the way the government is handling issues within our borders and outside them. I feel they could be doing more to better our economy and providing more money to schools and colleges rather than spending it in other countries.
I have a college degree and I have worked for what I have. I do my part in society by going to work and keeping companies in business by building their computer infrastructure.
Our country is no way wealthy at all we just hide it well. We have trillions in debt and thats going to catch up sometime, right? Yes our way of life is good and people still try to get here but its different now.
Some of the people that try to get here are illegally trying to sneak into our country and expect to be treated like everyone else. They didn't fight for our freedom and neither did their parents so why should I see them as deserving? Legally coming in and getting a legal job is impressive and I congrat them for that.
Our welfare system is greatly flawed, people purposely evade the law and abuse welfare. Not all people but there are plenty out there. They file false statements or purposely don't get a job because they are lazy or play their disability to its max rather than try. There needs to be better regulations on that, agreed?
Our country has its moments yes but look at how many depressions this country has had in the last 100 years, thats unreal. What does that say about how the government runs things? Isn't that something to look at?

While I disagree that GWB is responsible for all of the problems in the USA, he has made mistakes.
Community and private colleges are often the recipients of federal funds; students can apply for grants to help themselves get through school. But, how much more can or even should be spent for a higher education? The primary and secondary schools as a system need repairs; beginning with disarming the students and empowering teachers.
Our national debt is huge, but so is our GNP. But our ratios of debt to GNP needs work.
Illegal immigrants are a huge concern ~ our country was founded by unwanted immigrants (therefore illegal) but we evolved into something higher. We need a common sense approach to deal with this problem. Isolationism didn't work for Russia, China, N Korea and Japan; soldiers, walls and fences won't keep determined folks from entering or leaving this country.
Our welfare system has morphed into something that promotes a collective sense of entitlement and laziness. The system needs to be overhauled.
Examine the histories of most other countries in the world and you will find that their economies are in a state of constant flux.
Educate yourself and share what you learn about specific issues, avoid the broad brush strokes that cloud and distort even the good. Offer solutions to problems-we've got a huge surplus of whiners.
I offer this because your concern appears genuine.

One observation, Heath:
This is nothing special or extra-this is part of being a citizen.
I am not suggesting that you "leave" America, as someone else said. I merely suggest a little more action than just fulfilling your civic duty (having a job, voting, paying taxes).
Compared to many many other countries, America is in fact extremely rich and complacent, regardless of the public debt.
Seriously, Heath--go volunteer in an emerging nation and get some perspective. You can help build schools and medical facilities in Mexico for a start..that would also give you some perspective as to why there are so many Mexicans trying to get into America.
In a nutshell--don't just "sit on your arse", as our Oz friends say--take some action.

I feel that if we reach out to others beyond our capabilities, that we won't recognize and treat the problems within our own society until it is to late.
Every country has to go through their own issues and develop solutions to their problems. Yes help is needed and I don't have a problem with that. However, if we help to much and not let those countries learn from their mistakes, how can they learn not to repeat those same mistakes again?
While yes America has much, debt has a way of catching up sooner or later. When that time comes if you can't settle your debts, then it becomes a catastrophic failure and a countries very stability is at risk. That is why America is going through its credit crisis and people are loosing everything they own. The debt is just getting out of hand and it is catching up, Thus is helping fuel the weakening American dollar.

In this country, with all of the welfare programs available, you have to make a deliberate effort to live in poverty.
Our constitution promises the right to pursue happiness but doesn't guarantee it; my point, when we knowingly get into debt without regard of potential future catastrophes, it our fault.
We need to run our own lives responsibly.
Our country provides us with opportunity, if we don't strive to succeed whose fault is it?

Besides that, I'm talking about perspective. You can't get a sense of perspective about your own country till you've experienced living in another one; there is no basis for comparison!
Once you are able to make that comparison, you begin to realize--as Raven pointed out--just how fat, dumb and happy Americans have become.
Do you have any idea how whiny and ridiculous the above quote about U.S. "problems" sounds compared to an 11-year-old girl sent out to hook on the streets to buy a bag of rice to feed her extended family? Or a 6-year old who digs in the city dump for his next meal?? "Waaaaaahh, I'm too dumb to read the fine print on credit agreements and now I'm in hock!" Oh, whoa. Let's set up a special fund.
Look, all I'm saying-or suggesting, really--is that in order to appreciate your country and be able to really help your countrymen, you really need to get out of your insulated U.S. life so you can get some perspective. Learn from the rest of the world, then bring that knowledge home and use it to help your own.
Trust me on this. I've been there. I feel I do plenty for my country and countrymen-outside of my civic duty--because I have learned to appreciate what I've got and want to keep it that way.
